Drink two large glasses of water on rising, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon to maintain the water content of the bile. Sliced, un-peeled lemon in hot water is a bile stimulant too, and a healthy way to start the day. Add honey and some turmeric powder for anti-inflammatory benefits.
Take 2 fruits and 3 - 4 vegetable servings daily, especially from the cabbage family. These fruits and vegetables will provide fibre and important anti-oxidants. Carrots, beets, prunes, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kiwi, papaya, and apples are all very useful.
Include a whole grain cereal, such as oats, for breakfast. It is vital to have a high-fibre breakfast to keep a healthy liver, gallbladder, and cholesterol balance.
Adding Hi-Lignan Flax Seed Oil or Flax Seed Fibre high in lignans is also an excellent fibre source and can be added to oats porridge or muesli.
Lose excess weight with a diet that is low in animal fats and/or sugar and sweets.
Take extra vitamin C and 200 mg of vitamin E daily. The vitamins improve bile solubility. Innate Response Antioxidant is our best antioxidant supplement.
Fish oil, ideally as 3 or 4 capsules of Krill Oil daily, which provides 750 to 1000 mg of EPA and contains fat-mobilizing phosphatidyl choline. (We also recommend this supplement for clients with fatty liver.) Also consume oily fish twice or more weekly. Oily fish include salmon, sardine, halibut, herring, or trout.
Initially, you will need bile-stimulating herbs. Artichoke Extract is best and simplest for this, slightly lowering cholesterol and helping bowel movements along.
Alternatively, milk thistle can be used, as it has more benefits for detoxification and liver protection. At IMI, we often recommend a product called Liver Support, which contains Milk Thistle, Globe Artichoke, and further nutrients (choline, methionine) for optimal liver and gallbladder function.
Exercising three times per week reduces gall stone formation.
Take a probiotic containing Lactobacilus bowel flora. A probiotic will stimulate the excretion of bile from the intestine, as well as bind to other intestinal toxins and remove them.
