日暮途遠 
一九五六年是我整個攝影生涯中最值得紀念的一年, 因為攝得了「日暮途遠」。此作不僅是我的畫意攝影的心血結晶,更開我日後「街頭攝影」之先河,對我中期以至近期的創作路線與風格手法皆有極大之影響力及啟示性, 因此直至今日仍是我最心愛的作品之一。此作表現一種畫意攝影最崇高的品質:「意境」——正當暮色蒼茫, 夕陽殘照之中,街頭蕭條冷落,行人已極稀少,只有一輛三輪車緩緩地走過;一切都是那麼寥落靜穆,惟有遠處拍岸的潮音還隱約可聞。這是一片蒼涼慘淡的景色, 一種莊嚴肅穆的意象,一個畫意深遠的境界,正是庚信哀江南賦裡「日暮途遠,人間何世」的意境。而此種悲觀哲學的感傷情懷,在作者日後的作品中不止一次獲得回響。
