Calculation of the start and end of the month Ramadan for the Gregorian year 2024
The month of Ramadan in 2024 (year 1445 AH) begins at the visibility of the crescent Moon following the new moon of the second part of the month of March 2024. It ends at the visibility of the first crescent Moon following the new moon in the second part of the month of April 2024.
In March 2024, the geocentric new moon falls on March 10 at 9h 0m 26s UTC (at 10h 0m 26s in legal time French).
In April 2024, the geocentric new moon falls on April 8 at 6:20:52 p.m. UTC (at 8:20:52 p.m. in French legal time).
Please note, in mainland France, we switch to summer time on Sunday March 31.
The true lunation between the two new Moons lasts 29.3891811 days, or 29 days 9h 20m 25.255.
Between two new Moons, the following astronomical events will occur one after the other:
on 03/10/2024 at 09:00:26 UTC New moon.
on 03/11/2024 at 04:37:47 UTC the Moon has zero and increasing declination, right ascension 11.9m. Oh
on 03/12/2024 at 01:17:22 UTC the Moon passes through the ascending node of its orbit, mean longitude: +15° 42,2
03/17/2024 at 04:10:43 UTC First quarter moon.
on 03/17/2024 at 2:38:28 p.m. UTC the declination of the Moon is at its maximum, declination +28 32.3. 03/23/2024 at 3:44:59 p.m. UTC The Moon at apogee, distance from Earth 406,294.218 km, diameter
apparent: 29.49, mean longitude: 165.79°. on 03/25/2024 at 02h 08m 24s UTC the Moon has zero and decreasing declination, right ascension - 12h 11.9m.
03/25/2024 at 07:00:20 UTC: Full moon.
on 03/26/2024 at 04:07:29 UTC: the Moon passes through the descending node of its orbit, mean longitude:+195" 34.5.
on 04/01/2024 at 08:51:40 UTC the declination of the Moon is at its minimum, declination-28 34.3. 04/02/2024 at 03:14:44 UTC: Last quarter moon. on 04/07/2024 at 3:45:56 p.m. UTC the Moon has zero and increasing declination, right ascension Oh 11.9m.
on 04/07/2024 at 5:51:20 p.m. UTC The Moon at perigee, distance from Earth 358,849.734 km, apparent diameter: 33.38, mean longitude: 4.05.
on 04/08/2024 at 12:18:51 p.m. UTC: the Moon passes through the ascending node of its orbit, mean longitude: +15° 37.7
04/08/2024 at 6:20:52 p.m. UTC: New moon.
For the year 2024, the difference between TT-UTC is taken equal to 69.184s
Reminder of the criterion that we use at IMCCE for the naked eye visibility of the first crescent Moon: the crescent Moon is observable with the naked eye at sunset, if the center of the Moon is at minus 5º above the horizon and if its angular distance from the Sun (elongation) is at least 8". The minimum elongation of 8 corresponds to the slightly overestimated Danjon criterion (this criterion is more of the order of 7.5 °), the height difference of 5º corresponds to an arcus visionis of 5".
