It's getting trendy, but how good is it?
Caloric values of different fuels: Engineeringtoolbox
Coal is ~ 2 times more efficient than dry wood, propane is 3~ times per weight
For smoke, wood has the most, if used simple open air
So for such kind of stove above, it's good for warming, rather than for cooking, or boiling water?
Many portable or camp "rocket stove" on market are merely stripped down version of household rocket mass heater:
with a J tube(burning chamber + heat riser),
- air intake duct may be skipped
- most without secondary combustion
- weak or no venturi effect
Recommended portable/camping wood stove:
Improved stove from bioenergylists, eg, TLUD gasifier , ~4000BTU/h
aprovecho on TLUD, low PM2.5 stove
Peko Pe, aka original TLUD, OSTI research on PM2.5
with Concentrator disc, aka champion TLUD
Solo stove and similar ones. DIY a la solo stove/ gasifier
Btw, Solo (2011) or Hobo stove is a TLUD, but with weak effective secondary combustion design(under 15 in diameter), venturi / chimney effect( if 12 in height or more), and no turn down ratio control. Time will tell
Maybe this is why many YouTubers 2 3 do not understand wood gas, or gasifiers( eg fuel overfilled), do not compare eg with objective water boil test, find TLUDs unattractive. This isn't doing justice to TLUDs
Biolite campstove 2, FD TLUD, or semi gasifier , >4000BTU/h( assume 50% eff)
徐雲小號claim >8500BTU/h,but no emission data, 2
SSM FD pellet TLUD F-18 claim 15,000BTU, Alibaba
